This site is intended to be a compendium of all the nicknames currently used by high schools in the United States. It is a work in progress because of constant changes. New schools are opened. Schools close, merge, and enter or leave sharing arrangements with other schools. Nicknames are changed (most often in recent years to eliminate Native American-related nicknames, which many Native Americans find offensive). You will also note one of the pages lists numerous schools for which I was unable to find a nickname. If you have information on nicknames for any of these schools, please let me know. You might also want to check the "no nickname" page, because in some cases, I had to draw an inference about whether a name was unknown or nonexistent, and I may have inferred incorrectly. Also, there are some schools that are not members of any state association. Undoubtedly I have missed some of these entirely. Nicknames are listed in alphabetical order by nickname. Nicknames with adjectives or other descriptors have multiple listings. For example, "Fighting Irish" is both under the F's and under the I's as "Irish, Fighting". Please click on the links to go to the appropriate page. In addition, you also will find a link to a page listing the most common nicknames used in each state, one with links to the websites of state high school associations, and one with links to other websites related to school and college nicknames. |
